Preparing High School Students for College and Life Achievement
Whether visiting the campus or encountering our students within the community, people often comment about the leadership qualities, warmth and friendliness of MCA students. We endeavor to strengthen our high school students in their maturity, socially and spiritually.
Mannahouse Christian Academy strives to provide the absolute highest in academic excellence. We focus on providing the most effective, time-proven curriculum and educational techniques from teachers who are uniquely qualified to instruct in their course discipline. As a result, students at MCA regularly perform from at least 1.5 to 2 grade levels above their peers across the nation based upon results from the standardized California Achievement Test.
On average, instructors have ten years of tenure at MCA and fourteen years in the teaching profession. Instructors also participate in continuing educational training. Each instructor must profess Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior and display a lifestyle consistent with the Christian faith.
A MCA education is grounded in the basics. English courses expose students to the fundamentals of vocabulary, grammar, and writing structure. Students are exposed to a variety of classic literature in the form of novels, essays, short stories, poetry, and drama. In addition, students develop proficiency and confidence in making presentations and working as a team on a variety of assignments.
In math, students are placed according to their ability as opposed to grade level. Math courses include Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, College Prep Math, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus.
Along with an outstanding science and technology department, course work also includes studies in government, economics and U.S history.
Curriculum
Our curriculum consists of the latest up to date information and emphasizes a Christian perspective. We believe it is important to teach thinking skills as well as the fundamentals.
As technology advances and new discoveries are made virtually every day, we believe it is imperative that every one of our students graduates knowing the most up-to-dare information from the many different fields of science. We believe it is equally important that they have a relevent hand-on experience applying what they are learning to real world applications.
We offer dual credits opportunities through Portland Bible College and George Fox University. Honors classes are also offered to students desiring and academic challenge.
A variety of online AP courses are available for students to take such as:
AP Language and Composition
Course offers a rigorous preparation for college level writing and emulates a first year college composition class by preparing students to “write effectively and confidently in their college courses across the curriculum and in their professional and personal lives” (College Board). Students will read and analyze a wide range of non fiction texts from newspaper editorials, to travel writing, to literary non fiction, to biography, to sermons.
AP Literature
Advanced literature course will engage students in careful reading and analysis of a challenging set of literary works from a range of genres including the novel, short story, poetry, and drama. The focus of the course will be on intensive reading and discussion of the literature, as well introduce secondary critical essays for discussion and evaluation. Emphasis will be placed on thoughtful and cogent analysis of the readings using a variety of theoretical frameworks and devices.
AP Physics
AP Physics 1 is an algebra-based, introductory college-level physics course. The course explores traditional Newtonian Physics (kinematics, dynamics, energy, momentum, rotation, simple harmonic motion, and mechanical waves) with an introduction of circuitry. The course stresses inquiry-based learning to develop scientific critical thinking and reasoning skills in students. During lab work, students will use a variety of methods to collect data.
AP Calculus
This course is designed for prospective mathematics majors as well as for students whose primary interests are in engineering, physics, business, or the life sciences. The course contains a sufficient review of Pre-Calculus concepts. Included are the study of limits and their properties, introduction to differentiation techniques including product and quotient rule, u-substitution, and implicit differentiation, real world applications of differentiation, an introduction to integration techniques, applications to the real world using integration.
AP Biology
AP Biology course is designed to offer students a solid foundation in introductory college-level biology. By structuring the course around the four big ideas, enduring understandings, and science practices Students are assisted in developing an appreciation for the study of life and help them identify and understand unifying principles within a diversified biological world. What we know today about biology is a result of inquiry. Science is a way of knowing. Therefore, the process of inquiry in science and developing critical thinking skills is the most important part of this course. At the end of the course, students will have an awareness of the integration of other sciences in the study of biology, understand how the species to which we belong is similar to, yet different from, other species, and be knowledgeable and responsible citizens in understanding biological issues that could potentially impact their lives.
AP World History
From the beginning of civilization to the 20th century, this course helps your child to see God’s purpose and plan in human events. Your child will study the beginning of nations at the Tower of Babel, the beginning of writing in Sumer, the rise of republican government in Rome, the revival of humanities in the Renaissance, the rise of exploration from Europe, and the consequences of Communism in Russia.
